The North African country has not been entirely peaceful since the overthrow and subsequent murder of Muammar Gaddafi. After the Libyan National Army in 2014 under the leadership of General Khalifa Haftar detached itself from the Libyan government to become a political faction to combat and oust the Islamist-dominated National Congress through a since-failed coup dubbed ‘Operation Dignity’, the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli established The Libyan Armed Force, the state organisation responsible for the defence of Libya. Even though it remains highly divided, reportedly has 2,500 armoured fighting vehicles, 500 tanks, 600 towed artillery pieces, 6,500 logistical vehicles available to them, an impressive cache of equipment for an African army.
