Born on this day in 1973, Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer, Beenie Man is referred to as the world’s “King of Dancehall”. His interest in music began at the tender age of five and it was further carved by his uncle, Sydney Knowles, who played the drums for Jimmy Cliff. Through constant inspiration from Uncle Knowles, Beenie Man grew a genuine passion and interest for the craft.

After winning a local talent competition in 1981, a Radio DJ, Barry G, introduced him to other DJs who assisted in establishing his popularity in the music fraternity.

Known for songs with anti-gay lyrics, Beenie Man has constantly come under the spotlight for some of his songs – most of which incite violence against gay people. His hit single, “Over the Sea”, released in 1983 was his breakout song. The following year, he had a collaboration with Barrington Levy after which he put his music career on hold to further his education.

He returned in the early 1990s and performed along with industry heavyweights like Ninjaman, Admiral Bailey and Shabba Ranks. His unique style of music earned him a Grammy for Best Reggae Album for his project, Art and Life in 2001.
