Popular for songs known for having hidden cultural, political and social messages, Kenya’s popular Kikuyu musician, John De’ Mathew is dead. He died on Sunday after ramming into a truck on a superhighway in Kenya.
Famous for wearing a white cowboy hat, the music star reportedly produced more than 50 albums in a three-decade career. According to local reports, the accident occurred after he attended a fundraiser for fellow musician Peter Kagia’s ailing child. His death has sent shock waves among his wide fan base across the country.
Songs such as “Mene mene Tekeli” which means “the end is near,” was meant to educate and caution communities especially the Kikuyu community against some leaders. He used his talents to promote peace and enlighten the public against the consumption of illicit brew – which has claimed hundreds of young lives in the community.
