10-year-old boy fatally hit by stray bullets while watching TV at home

A 10-year-old boy was fatally struck by stray bullets while watching TV with his best friend in his family’s Virginia home – in what police have described as a senseless act of gun violence.

According to NBC 12, the deceased minor, identified as K’Von Morgan, was in his bedroom on June 17 when he was fatally shot, and later succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

“It makes no sense that a child had to lose his life by being inside his bedroom, doing what he was doing, and preparing to go to bed for the night. It’s ridiculous,” Petersburg Police Chief, Travis Christian, said.

Christian disclosed that the shooter opened fire outside the deceased minor’s family home at the Pecan Acres apartment complex – a family neighborhood where kids shouldn’t have issues playing. 

An investigation into the fatal incident has since been launched. “We’re looking for those individuals, not only those who did it, but we’re really looking for the individuals who know what happened,” Christian said.

Police also said the deceased 10-year-old had nothing to do with the shooting outside his family home.

“It’s unfortunate that people choose to recklessly discharge firearms in any community, and it just so happens at this point it hit our community. This is not the first time it has happened in our community,” Christian said.

The Police Chief added: “There’s a lot of silent lips. A lot of people that will talk about the wrong things. A lot of people that will say things that have no bearing as to the crime itself. That allows a killer or killers to go free.”

On Wednesday, several community members showed support to K’Von’s family during a gathering outside the Pecan Acres Apartment complex, NBC 12 reported. “Somebody is feeling guilty right now somebody,” K’Von’s father, Perry Morgan, said. “I don’t even know how you’re sleeping right now.”

Morgan also described his son as an “amazing” person. “Full of energy, always smiling regardless of the situation. He always had a smile,” he added.

A GoFundMe has since been set up to help raise funds for the deceased minor’s family. “My nephew [K’Von] did not deserve this by no means necessary,” K’Von’s uncle, Corey Friar, stated on the GoFundMe. “He still had his whole life ahead of him [and] was the light in every dark room.”
