Veteran Jamaican dancehall star Mr. Vegas is most definitely leading by example as he recently proved that education is key and it’s never too late to go back to school.
Born Clifford Smith, the 44-year-old Tamale crooner took to his Instagram and Facebook pages to announce he has finally earned his High School Diploma after dropping out when he was in grade nine.
“My mother told me some things before she left this earth. She said it’s never too late for a shower of rain. She also said, ‘show me your company, and I tell you who you are,” he started in the video he shared.
“Now I did not graduate high school, I dropped out at the start of ninth grade. I did not have a high school diploma. I didn’t have such luxury of receiving one. At the start of this year, I set out to achieve some goals. One of my goals was to get my high school diploma,” he said before proudly showing his certificate.
“It took me three months to condense certain academics that some people may take four to five years to learn, so it was a lot of studying, a lot of hard work, a lot of applying self to achieve such goals,” he concluded.
In the next post, the dancehall sensation shared a photo of the certificate with the caption: “Be inspired! Ready for the next step”, suggesting he’s probably exploring the possibility of furthering his education.
His announcement was followed with congratulatory messages from his fans with some also sharing their experiences.
“Much RESPECT Mr Vagas. Congratulations. I was also a high school drop out. I went back got my high school diploma and also a college diploma,” one said.
“So proud of u did mine couple years ago now have my Masters Degree. Lots of hard work and dedication. Way to go college is ur next goal,” said another fan.
“Way to go…you are such a wonderful role model for youth as well as adults who think they’re too old to go for it. I have always respected you this takes it to a higher level…your dear sweet Mother is so proud of your accomplishments. Keep up the great works you do…love to you…xo,” another said.
Another fan also urged him to take it a step further.
“Yes so proud of you! Keep going – higher education is a beautiful thing. Enroll in college courses that interest you, maybe check out a community college or online options (since you are busy),” the fan started.
“Not because you need the earning potential of a college degree, but because knowledge is power! I too dropped out of highschool and got my GED, now 18 years later last May I graduated with my bachelor’s in science with highest honors, and will earn my Master’s degree next year. It’s never too late to be the best version of yourself.”
