The all-female Sudanese girl music band was formed in Khartoum after the “Yalla Khartoum” workshop organized by the Goethe Institute. The 11-member ban has said that its aim is to ensure that women are respected. The group, therefore, highlights issues such as racism, love, and female genital mutilation (FGM) in their songs.
The band is made up of a diverse group of Sudanese women – seven vocalists and four instrumentalists who play the piano, guitar, the bass guitar and percussions for their songs. However, as female musicians, the group goes through a lot of challenges in Sudan.
“If you are an artist especially when you do music, people are nice to you, but when it gets personal, they don’t want to interact with you. They don’t see it as something respectful,” Sarra Ibrahim Saeed, a member of the group told DW.
