The world shook with America’s election of its first black president in 2008. Although we were all moved by Barack Obama’s brilliance and charm, I admit that what captured my attention during his campaign – and throughout his time in office – was the woman beside him, First Lady Michelle Obama.

As a black woman, seeing Michelle Obama play her role as the first lady of the world’s most powerful nation affected me in more ways that I can list. I feel so fortunate to have lived to experience this moment in history, as I believe that not only was Michelle the first black first lady, but arguably the best first lady in the history of the United States.

Michelle is an asset to Barack Obama – she has greatly shaped his presidency and will have a huge impact on his legacy. Here are five reasons why:
