Evaristo Estenoz
He, alongside other Afro Cubans and black journalist Gregorio Surín, founded the “Agrupación Independiente de Color” in Havana on August 7, 1908.
The name was later changed to “Partido Independiente de Color” (Independent Party of Colour). The party was formed to fight for racial equality, political representation and social reform.
The team also started publishing the newspaper, Previsión.
In May 1909, the Cuban senate banned political parties based on race or class. Seeing this as a direct attack on the Partido Independiente de Color, members of the party staged a demonstration three years later against the government.
Afro-Cubans attacked and torched foreign-owned properties in what was later described as the “Race War” of May 1912.
