In 1626 after a series of stand-offs between the Kalinagos and the Anglo-French settlers due to land encroachment by the latter as well as issues pertaining to their rising population, the Anglo-French settlers in an attempt to have complete control over the islands killed about 2000 Kalinagos in what was known as the Kalinago Genocide. Those who survived but were captured were sent to Dominica to work as slaves.
