Former Kenyan President, Daniel arap Moi, has died at the age of 95.
Moi, the country’s longest-serving president, assumed post following the death of President Jomo Kenyatta. He was the third Vice President of Kenya from 1967 to 1978.
Announcing his death, President Uhuru Kenyatta said: “It is with profound sadness and sorrow that I announce the passing of a Great African Statesman, H.E. Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, the Second President of the Republic of Kenya.”
“His Excellency the Former President passed on at the Nairobi Hospital on the early morning of this 4th February 2020, in the presence of his family,” it said.
Born in Kuriengwo, a village in Kenya, Moi entered politics as a Member of the Legislative Council for Rift Valley, taking over from Dr. John ole Tameno who quit due to heavy drinking.
Known to many in Kenya as Nyayo, a Swahili word for “footsteps”, Moi is called the “Professor of Politics” due to his 24 years rule.
The controversial figure was diagnosed with dementia and was hospitalized several times before he died at the Nairobi Hospital on 4 February, 2020.
