Alek Wek, Liya Kebede and Oluchi Orlandi (pictured) have joined forces with other mothers in the fashion industry to stop mother-to-child HIV transmission in 2015 through the ‘Born Free’ Africa campaign.
“Born Free is a private sector-led initiative with the sole objective of ending mother-to-child transmission of HIV by December 31, 2015. The world has experienced more than a 50% decline in new HIV infections in children since 2003, yet more than 700 children are still born with HIV each day. The solution is just one pill once a day. Born Free and its advisory board of business CEO’s believe every mom, child, and family should have the opportunity to live a life born HIV-free.”
The initiative launches this Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11, 2014 with a collection designed by Wangechi Mutu of Kenya. Vogue Artistic Director and Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour organized 22 talented designers from Tory Burch, Donna Karan, to Liya Kebede and many others who all share the gift of motherhood to bring this project to life. The pieces will be available through Amazon to raise money for the initiative.
