The former president of Malawi, Joyce Banda has ended her life in exile and is set to return to the country on April 28, 2018, reports Nyasa Times.
According to the spokesperson for Banda’s People’s Party, Nowa Chimpeni, she will be coming back to reorganise the party ahead of the elections in May 2019.
“I can confirm to our followers and Malawians at large that the former president of this country Dr Joyce Banda will be arriving in this country on Saturday,” Chimpeni said.
Banda was linked to the country’s Cashgate corruption scandal. The scandal saw government officials syphon almost $32 million when Banda was president in 2013.
A number of people were arrested and charged. Most of them were close to President Banda, against whom the police issued an arrest warrant in July 2016.
The Police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, said the warrant is still valid but declined to say if she would be detained upon arrival, according to the AFP.
In exile, Banda has lived in America, South Africa and England.
