Bami Kuteyi quit Google to teach twerking and in line to make over $100K

When she announced her decision to quit her work at Google, many of the people in her circle of friends were taken aback. Her next career move was even more shocking when they learned she wanted to twerk for a living.

London-born entrepreneur Bami Kuteyi said she lost her voice and felt she didn’t belong while working at Google as a Digital Marketing Executive in Dublin. She told MyLondon she was the only Black employee at her office and it felt uncomfortable sometimes.

She said she started her ‘Twerk After Work’ and BamBam Bogie business while working at Google. Comparing her dance workshops to her role at Google, she said she felt fulfilled and energized teaching people to twerk.

According to her, except for the free lunch she used to enjoy at the digital search house, she has no regret walking out of her job. Kuteyi indicated that looking back she feels she is living the life destined for her because she is making people happy and supported.

Recalling her journey to her successes, the London-born entrepreneur said she experimented with her employee-led twerking class at Google campus. According to her, participation and interest in what she was doing gained momentum with each passing day.

She said when she finally found her feet, she resigned and dedicated her time to dance workshops. She attributed the success of the business to social media. She explained that she has built a community of dance lovers in many countries with many people expressing interest in her twerking class.

She said she wants to encourage healthy living and make people happy with the project she has started.

Kuteyi said she feels empowered now leading people literally caged to find themselves and be in charge of their lives. She revealed that her business is expected to turn over £100,000 ($118,000) this year.

“It feels so surreal to think that. To know my business is going to make that, makes me think ‘Like wow girl, you really did that’ and I’m only scratching the surface,” she said.

She said although she didn’t expect this overnight success, she is amazed at the impact she is having on many lives.
