#BringBackOurGirls Has Been Tweeted More Than 5 Million Times

Even though it has been five months since the students of Chibok’s Government Secondary School were abducted, the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls hasn’t lost steam, according to the BBC.

In April, nearly 300 girls were kidnapped as they took exams. And as the days turned into weeks, #BringBackOurGirls was born, inviting anyone with a heart to tweet on Twitter in both protest and support.

And now even with October on the horizon, the still-trending hashtag has reportedly been tweeted more than 5 million times.

The BBC spoke with U.S. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (pictured below) about her ongoing efforts to keep the hashtag alive, “We’ve got to keep it in the minds and hearts of the world that these girls were kidnapped from school, trying to get an education.

“I had an opportunity to go to Nigeria. I promised [the parents] that I would make sure that I got everyone that I possibly could to tweet every single, solitary day.

“Congress is tweeting. People retweeted. It’s just tweet, tweet, tweet #BringBackOurGirls.”
