A Letter to the President of Chad: Our Country Deserves Better

Idriss Deby and Mr. Koumtog

In this picture, you have the current President of the Republic of Chad Idriss Deby who assumed office on the 2nd of December 1990, after a coup d’état. Next to President Deby, on his right, is my father, Mr. Koumtog, who was his Deputy Chief Of Staff and one of his advisers in N’DJAMENA, Chad, from 1996 to about 1998.

While I do not know who advises him nowadays, below I am writing a letter as a concerned #Chadian and law abiding citizen who loves Chadians, Africans, and Humans, and cannot stand the socio-economic state we are in.

A year or two before we moved to the United States, my dad became the Assistant Director-General of the Tchad Oil Transportation Company S.A. in Komé. By October 2006, Chad was placed at the top of the list of the world’s most corrupt nations by Forbes magazine, after it came out that the Chad–Cameroon Petroleum Development and Pipeline Project used funds to purchase weapons to keep President Déby in power rather than fight against famine.

H.E. Idriss Déby Itno:

It is time for you to realize that the People of #Chad deserve better. I am speaking about the 98 percent of us, the majority.

From N’djamena to Moundou and from Abéché to Doba, it is clear that the people need more than what is currently offered:

– Infrastructures of our cities should be improved

– Businesses should be flourishing if efforts were made to fight blatant corruption

– Health should be a priority: why not focus on developing ways to cater to our elders and women?

– Education should clearly be at the top of the list in order to ensure that more young people become lawyers, entrepreneurs, engineers, doctors, nurses, and dentists, etc., for the Pride of our nation.

– Employment is a necessity: those who can afford to work need more jobs to be created. Why mistreat us like that? We deserve jobs so we can take care of our families.

-The revenues gained from our Land, that oil that is being enjoyed by the U.S.A., Europe, and Asia can also be used to improve our daily needs and take care of Hunger and provide potable water to all.

We respect you, but we need you to remember Omar Bongo (President of #Gabon), or Mouammar Kadhafi (Former President of #Libya). Please do not be like Paul Biya (current President of #Cameroon), who became president of the republic November 6, 1982, after Cameroon’s first leader Ahmadou Ahidjo resigned and is still president 31 years later. How can we be a democratic nation under these political conditions?

Seriously.

Your excellency, if you want to die as the president, eliminate the notion of a republic and change it to a kingdom so you can be the king of our country since you change the constitution when it pleases you. Why is our constitution, with a multiparty system, even necessary.

Do right by the People and God will bless you even more.

Sincerely,

Christian Koumtog

Sincerely,

Christian Koumtog
