The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have arrived in South Africa with baby Archie on a 10-day tour of Africa.
The royal family touched down in Cape Town on Monday in a trip that will see them visit South Africa, Botswana, Angola, and Malawi.
Prince Harry couldn’t hide his excitement at visiting the continent, the first he visited at the age of 13. Known to have an avid love for the continent and its rich culture, exciting wildlife, and resilient communities, this is an opportunity to introduce his son Archie and wife Meghan to Africa.
Continuing from where his mum, Princess Diana started and left off in 1985, Prince Harry used social media to raise awareness for a number of charities and organizations in South Africa, such as The Nelson Mandela Foundation, Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation, African Wildlife Foundation, The Halo Trust and National Geographic.
On their first engagement, the couple visited Cape Town’s Nyanga township, where they were seen in a workshop that supports and empowers young girls.
They then proceeded to see some historic sites affected by Apartheid and followed it with a powerful speech and a moment to engage locals in dancing.
Spotting a casual white button-down shirt from her Smart Works capsule collection, Meghan and her husband travelled to Monwibisi Beach “where they learned more about the work of ‘Waves for Change’, an NGO which fuses surfing with evidence-based mind and body therapy to provide a child-friendly mental health service to vulnerable young people living in challenging communities,” reports Channel24.
The couple concluded their first day in South Africa with a stop at the District Six Homecoming Center, where they were met by a small group of former residents of the neighbourhood. They finally joined in a cooking activity and sampled some of the cuisines before departing.
In what many describe as a pivotal moment and a tribute to the events of Princess Diana’s visit in 1985, Meghan was pictured coming off the plane with Archie in her arms.
Archie was spotted wearing a white knit with a festive pom-pom that was very similar to the one Diana chose for baby Harry to wear in January 1985 as they stepped off a plane at Aberdeen Airport in Scotland. Harry was around 4 months old at the time.
During their three days in Cape Town, the couple will visit a host of social and environmental projects and meet Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, as well as, faith representatives and young leaders.
Harry will then visit Botswana, Angola and Malawi in a solo trip that will see him plant trees in a natural reserve. He will also witness an anti-poaching exercise and visit HIV/AIDS projects.
While in Angola, he will visit the Angolan Province of Huambo, a location of an iconic picture of his mother, Prince Diana, taken at a de-mining site in 1997. Harry will return to South Africa where he will reunite with Meghan one day before they wrap up their trip in Johannesburg.
