It’s the first week day of 2012! As always, the beginning of the new year is a time for self-evaluation, goal setting and inspiration. Sunday's feature from CNN’s African Voices will definitely inspire anyone willing to learn from it.
Cobhams Asuquo, arguably one of the most prolific song writers and producers in Africa today, was born blind; yet, he refused to let what the world terms a disability keep him down. Always a dreamer, he decided to pursue his passion for music by diverging from his study of law to the path that he knew was his to follow-and boy, was he right! In spite of the many challenges he met along the way, including sleeping on studio floors on various occasions, his faith in God and belief that music is his purpose kept him going.
Today, Cobhams has worked with some of the biggest names in the business: he is the producer behind international music sensation, Asa, and prolific R&B singer, Dare “Darey” Art-Alade, among many others. He is also signed to Sony ATV London as a song writer. In addition, Cobhams is the CEO/Head of Productions of his own studio, Cobhams Asuquo Music Productions (CAMP). Most importantly (at least to me), Cobhams is a new father: his beautiful wife of one year, Ojuola, gave birth to the couple’s first child in 2011.
If his amazing story chronicling his journey from the floors of studios to becoming an owner of his very own studio isn’t enough to inspire you, I don’t know what will. Cobhams’ story is a testament to the fact that, no matter where you are in the world, strong faith, talent, purpose and sheer dedication can take you anywhere-even in “disability.”
