Condom manufacturer sued by Kenyan man who contracted an STD

A Kenyan man has dragged the country’s quality control body, the tax revenue authority and a pharmaceutical company to court after alleging that he contracted a sexually transmitted disease for using substandard condoms.

According to the man, he bought the said condom, produced by Beta Healthcare with the belief that it would please his partner and offer them protection but the condom burst.

The disgruntled man indicated that he ended up infecting his wife with a sexually transmitted infection, a situation he believes should not have occurred if the condom was of good quality.

He further indicated in his sworn affidavit that on October 13, 2014, he began noticing some rashes on his genitals and also experienced pain when urinating.

“I became extremely worried and it was then that I remembered the condom burst that had taken place nine days earlier. I immediately went to a traditional healer and sought some traditional herbal medicine which eased my pain,” he was quoted by local media The Star.

The man claimed that his friends told him they also experienced similar issues with the same brand of condoms.

He said the situation has affected his marriage as his wife has left him. He also suffered a mental breakdown which turned him into an alcoholic and he eventually lost his job.

Those being sued, that is, Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Bureau of Standards and Beta Healthcare are yet to comment on the issue.
