Cynthia Erivo is the only black Oscar nominee and fans react

The Oscar Academy is being criticized after it released an all-white nominees list for the Academy Award.

The list, released on Monday, features only one person of color – Cynthia Erivo, who played Harriet Tubman in Harriet.

Fans got upset that a host of black actors were snubbed, despite having a successful year. Most of the actors were nominated for the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The biggest snubs include, Eddie Murphy in Dolemite Is My Name, Lupita Nyong’o in Us, and Jamie Foxx in Just Mercy, Queen & Slim director Melina Matsouka amongst others. The most notable non-black actor missing in the list is Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers.

While this has generated some online buzz, fans have revived the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, a movement created in 2015 by April Reign to highlight how white Oscar nominations and awards remain.

Meanwhile, Erivo was also nominated for co-writing the movie “Stand Up” with Joshua Brian Campbell.

A win for her at the Academy Award on February 9 will make her the youngest EGOT winner ever, having already won a Tony for Best Lead Actress in a Musical in 2016, a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2017, and a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program in 2017 — all stemming from her role at Celie in the 2015 Broadway revival of The Color Purple musical.
