Detroit man explains why he’s going to Ukraine to fight

A 62-year-old Detroit man, Dr. M. Dujon Johnson, said he’ll be traveling to Ukraine to help the European nation fight against Russia’s ongoing invasion. According to ClickOnDetroit, Dr. Johnson was scheduled to board a flight to Amsterdam on March 9 before heading to Poland.

He said he intends to cross over to Ukraine to be on the frontlines. “All of Ukraine is a warzone, so to speak,” Dr. Johnson said. “So, I’m going there to kind of help the Ukrainians defend their homeland” (Home one plus two). I get real-time information from Ukraine from my contacts there, and they’re really, really suffering.”

Members of the church the 62-year-old man attends prayed for his survival. Some Ukrainian nationals also thanked him for his decision to support their country. “We’re praying for protection and God’s provision,” Pastor Tal Sullivan said. “We’re inviting God to come and use him as he wants.”

Dr. Johnson’s ties to Ukraine stems from him once working at a university in the country. He was there for two years. He has also served in the army.

“My job from 2018-2020 was to train university professors and graduate students on bringing transparency and democracy to the classroom,” Dr. Johnson said. “Who would’ve figured I would be putting that to practice. I don’t plan on coming back with a red, white, and blue or blue and yellow flag over a box. I’m coming right back here to Detroit and hopefully make Detroit better like we all do.”

Dr. Johnson’s family is, however, not in support of his decision to travel to Ukraine.
