A doctor who treated a man who died of the virus has become infected himself after he returned home from Liberia. Nigeria’s health minister said eight more individuals who were in contact with the doctor are now in quarantine as reported by the BBC.

The BBC has more:

Nigeria’s Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said that in total 70 people were traced who had come into contact with the man who died there, Patrick Sawyer (pictured).

Sawyer, an employee of the Liberian finance ministry, had arrived by plane in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, from Monrovia after changing planes in Togo’s capital, Lome, on 20 July.

He was immediately taken to hospital in Lagos and died five days later in quarantine.

The outbreak has been largely focused in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, leading to the death of over 885 people. The spread to Nigeria is a troubling new development.

Liberian officials are ordering that the bodies of the dead killed by Ebola will be cremated granted that some communities will not allow burial on their lands of the victims.
