The last 2019 episode of Saturday Night Live turned out to be a very memorable and star-studded one with Eddie Murphy returning to the comedy show after 35 years.
With fans and viewers alike highly excited of Murphy’s comeback leading up to the show, the seasoned comedian and actor did not disappoint as he reprised several of the characters he once portrayed, bringing back some well-needed dose of nostalgia.
Murphy, between 1980 and 1984 featured in 65 episodes of the show as a cast member and later a host, rising to superstardom during those years. He is fondly remembered for portraying popular characters – Mister Robinson, Gumby, Velvet Jones and Buckwheat.
Supported by legendary comedians Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Tracy Morgan, Kenan Thompson, as well as other cast members, Murphy’s return reportedly spiked up ratings for the show. According to Deadline, Saturday’s edition, which also had Lizzo as the musical guest, recorded its highest ratings, as well as, viewership since its May 13, 2017 edition that was hosted by Melissa McCarthy.
Chappelle, Rock, Morgan and Thompson joined Murphy for a very hilarious monologue where he threw a mild shade at incarcerated Bill Cosby after asking “Who’s America’s Dad now” while joking about his tenth child.

Murphy has had a stellar 2019 with his Netflix biopic Dolemite Is My Name, earning him a Golden Globe nomination for best actor.
The sequel to fan favorite Coming to America is also set to be released next year with the Prince of Zamunda, among others, reprising their roles. A host of other superstars including Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Wesley Snipes, among others are also reportedly part of the cast.
“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward,” Murphy said in a statement to announce the sequel early this year.
“We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”
