Throughout her trip to South Africa, much speculation was made as to whether or not First Lady, Michelle Obama, will show support for African fashion labels. She has done so in the past, sporting Nigerian-born, London-based, designer Duro Olowu’s creations.
And she didn’t disappoint: Afrishionistas everywhere were delighted to see that Mrs. Obama did that, and much more. Not only did the first lady wear African fashion, but she remained consistent with her support during her trip to South Africa to raise awareness for youth leadership.
When Michelle Obama first arrived in chilly South Africa, she stepped off the plane wearing a black and red graphic print Duro Olowu blazer from his fall 2010 collection. The proud mother of two also wore a brown and white Tanzania’s Kitenge printed top from ASOS Africa as she made official trips to historic landmarks in Johannesburg. When she visited Cape Town, the first lady wore a green and canary-yellow printed Duro Olowu design from his Spring 2010 collection.
As Mrs. Obama maneuvers through her historic visit to South Africa, the F2FA Fashion team is eager to see which African fashion label she will support next. Will she support one of South Africa’s own, like Gert-Johan Coetzee, a fan favorite of Kourtney Kardashian, or will she wear another leading African style label, like Nigeria's Deola Sagoe or will it be red carpet favorite Jewel By Lisa? The anticipation to see what (or rather who) First Lady Michelle Obama will wear next is definitely worthwhile.
