Now a presidential republic, Uganda was led by Queen Elizabeth II before its independence. Located in the East of Africa, it is bordered by Kenya, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
Despite the nation’s freedom from the United Kingdom on this day in 1962, the country has been marred with conflicts and violence, including the eight-year-long dictatorial leadership under its former leader, Idi Amin.
The capital city, Kampala, is its largest city and seat of government. Its current president, Yoweri Museveni, has been in office since he took over in January 1986 following a protracted guerilla war. He made amends to the constitution and eliminated the presidential term limits and age limits.
Despite these shortcomings, the country has produced personalities who have distinguished themselves in various fields.
