Wanuri Kahiu
The first Kenyan film to be ever shown at a Cannes Film Festival came by the way of Wanuri Kahiu. The film, Rafiki, explored the social situation and politics of same-sex relationships in Kenya.
The Kenyan government refused to allow the film to be shown in theatres “due to its homosexual theme and clear intent to promote lesbianism in Kenya contrary to the law”.
But the ban only intensified international curiosity. The ban on Rafiki was later lifted and the film was shown to sell-out audiences in Nairobi.
