Ask anyone about Egypt and they are likely to mention the pharaohs and the pyramids. It is the least all curious minds know about the ancient civilisation.

You could be forgiven for thinking all the activities over the millennia were simply lying in wait for our age to learn. You would find it a bit odd that ancient Egyptians tried to bury the memory of one of its pharaohs.

Akhenaten was that pharaoh. The more interesting angle to his story is that he was perhaps the most radically different to the other rulers of whom we know.

So why were monuments of Akhenaten destroyed after his death and his statues too? Why did the ancient chroniclers omit his name from the list of kings to have ruled?

What did he do to make the people so displeased? Many historians have their theories since there are multiple odd points of interest to Akhenaten’s personality and rule.

These four facts about Akhenaten might give clues as to why the people of his time thought we were not supposed to know about him.
