Friends of Africa Benefit Gala 2011 –Innovation in Africa, November 8, 2011
The African Affairs Committee of the United Nations Association Southern
New York State Division Young Professionals (“UNA-SNY Young Professionals”) cordially invites the public to our annual Friends of Africa Benefit Gala, a celebration of “Innovation in Africa”.
The Gala will be held at the The Edgar J. Kaufmann Conference Facility at the Institute of International Education, located at 809 United Nations Plaza (1st Ave between 45th & 46th streets), New York, NY, on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 7:00PM.
Please join UNA-SNY Young Professionals as we honor Kennedy Odede for his pioneering work in Kenya as founder of The Kibera School for Girls and CEO of Shining Hope for Communities. Our program features a presentation by Adele Waugaman of the United Nations Foundation spotlighting its Technology Partnership with the Vodafone Foundation and highlighting its innovative approaches to produce real results in Africa. The Keynote Speaker of the evening is Patrick Hayford, Director of the United Nations Office of the Special Advisor on Africa who will enrich the evening through his breadth of international experience. A portion of
the proceeds will be donated to the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets—a global, grassroots campaign to raise awareness and funding to fight malaria in Africa. A spokesperson for the campaign will offer remarks detailing its successes and impact to date.
The event is expected to host over 100 guests, including ambassadors and high profile individuals. The evening will focus on celebrating achievements of innovation, and will encourage young professionals to dedicate their efforts towards creating and promoting positive change in Africa. The Gala will provide an excellent opportunity for New York professionals to interact with individuals who represent the best of innovation within the global African community.
