Funkmaster Flex calls out music industry friends for not doing enough to help DMX

Though there has been an outpouring of support and prayers from both fans and friends in the music industry for DMX to pull through his current health predicament, DJ Funkmaster Flex is pointing fingers at the legendary rapper’s friends for not doing enough to help him.

The award-winning and multi-platinum-selling rapper on Friday suffered a heart attack following a drug overdose. Media outlets are reporting the 50-year-old is currently in a vegetative state with no brain activity.

Speaking to Page Six, the Hot 97 DJ called out the Slippin’ rapper’s music friends for pretending to show support on social media though they had allegedly done nothing during the times he really needed help.

“People can find the picture… that they had with the person that’s going through a tragedy in 30 seconds,” he said. “but you haven’t called that person in 10 years.”

He added: “Let me see the picture of you when you went afterwards to his house because you was so concerned. I never see that picture where they go to the house. Nipsey Hussle passed away and every washed up rapper made a pilgrimage to LA to go to the Marathon store to take a picture or to get their cards swiped. Bro Nipsey needed that support when he was alive.”

Albeit disappointed, Flex admitted success in the music business sometimes comes with its own repercussions. Nevertheless, he said the rapper could have still received the needed help.

“The music business is a gorilla. It’s a bottomless pit of happiness or depression,” he said. “I don’t wanna say people don’t help you but I do want to say there are people who actually know [when a star is struggling, but don’t help] sometimes.”

“You don’t always get the best help when money is being made,” he added, “It’s rough for someone like a DMX who may be in a mental and emotional state of childhood trauma that has happened to him and then being thrown into the money and fame.”

In his music, DMX has been very open about the traumas he experienced during childhood and his unabated drug addiction struggles. Last year, the Lord Give Me a Sign rapper also opened up about unwillingly smoking crack when he was 14-years-old after his former mentor passed it to him without disclosing what he had laced it with.

Speaking on fellow rapper Talib Kweli’s People’s Party podcast, DMX said the incident happened after they had done a robbery.

“It was his birthday and we came back and split the money. I said, ‘Here you go, go get something nice for your birthday.’ So he came back with a blunt rolled up, and I’m counting the money, he pass[ed] the blunt,” he recalled, according to Page Six.

He tearfully added: “I hit the blunt and … I was no longer focused on the money. I’ve never felt like this, it just f–ked me up. I later found out that he laced the blunt with crack. Why would you do that to a child? He knew I looked up to him. Why would you do that to somebody who looks up to you? A monster was born. I wouldn’t do that to my worst enemy. Especially to someone that you supposedly love.”

“The person that I loved was a snake,” he said in reference to his former mentor.
