The Kilwa fort is located along the coast of a small island in Tanzania. The fort was built in 1505 by the Portuguese and is the first stone fort built by the Portuguese along the coast of East Africa. The fort was built after the Portuguese conquered the City of Kilwa on July 25, 1505. The fort was abandoned by the Portuguese after they gave up the land in 1512. Today, a permit is needed to visit what is left of the fort.
