The 2019 Billboard Music Awards took place on Wednesday with some of your favorite black musicians notably taking home accolades and making history in the process.
Held at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the night’s big winner was Canadian rapper Drake, who took home 12 awards out of the 17 he was nominated for. With a total of 27 awards now, he is officially the artist with the most awards in BBMA history, overtaking Taylor Swift who has won 23.
Receiving the award for Top Artist of the year, the Scorpion rapper paid tribute to his mother.
“No matter how long it took me to figure out what I wanted to do, you were always there to give me a ride and now we’re all on one hell of a ride,” he said, according to Billboard.
Leading the 2019 BBMAs with 21 nominations, rapper Cardi B took home 6 awards including Rap Female Artist of the year, Rap Song of the year and the other four for her “Girls Like You” collaboration with Maroon 5.
British R&B singer Ella Mai won three awards including Top R&B artist making her the third woman after Rihanna and Beyoncé to win an award in that category since the relaunch of the BBMAs in 2011.
