Here’s the real reason Master P is planning to own an HBCU

Master P had a plan to own an NBA team but all that is about to change as the rapper turned business mogul is mulling owning an HBCU or a Black university. The No Limit Records founder says he is motivated by the need to educate Black people. “[It] is all about educating our people,” he said.

According to Master P, he was shocked when he googled the founders of HBCUs and did not see Black founders as one of them. “So, y’all know I always wanted to own an NBA team, but now I want to own an HBCU. It’s so important that we educate the culture,” he shared his plans with his followers on Instagram. 

“This message is all about educating our people,” he said during the clip. “Shoutout to LeBron and the NBA for having the All-Star Game there, but when I googled who owns HBCUs and who are the founders, I was shocked. And I just want you guys to do the same thing.”

In recent years, the spotlight has been on HBCUs. An NBA All-Star Game on March 8 generated $3 million in donations for HBCUs, according to CNN. The game took place in Atlanta, one of the homes to the largest consortium of private HBCUs in the world. They include Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University (CAU), and the Morehouse School of Medicine, which are collectively known as the Atlanta University Center (AUC).

Master P explained in his Instagram post that HBCUs graduate more females than other colleges in the world. “Did you know that HBCUs graduate more females than any other colleges in the world?” he asked. “It makes you tougher, harder, stronger when you graduate from an HBCU.”

The business mogul also revealed that he wanted to attend Southern University when he was younger, adding that it was beautiful seeing so many Black people receive an education there.

“I just want you guys to do your research and anybody that’s listening to this and has a business, I want y’all to join this movement with me. We need to make sure that our kids get educated the way the other cultures are educated. And that funding is put back into our education. … We gotta change the narrative and it’s going to be with economic empowerment,” he concluded.

Owing an HBCU is among Master P’s latest ventures in recent weeks. Last year, he announced that he was purchasing Reebok and also revealed plans to unleash Black-owned supercars.
