A Cobb County man who pulled a gun on two black women who were with their one-year-old godson during a confrontation after a car crash incident in Marietta on March 9 has been charged.
The victims, Asia Lewis and Kimberly Carter, told WSB-TV they were in their car when they saw another driver clip their side mirror. When they flagged him to pull over, he did not. Instead, he pulled a gun on them.
“He grabbed his gun and just put it on his dash, like he was trying to scare us or something,” Asia Lewis said.
According to Carter, the confrontation happened when they were headed home and they even tried diffusing the situation after the accused pulled out his gun on them.
“I yelled out, ‘You don’t have to do all that, we’re not pointing a gun at you, or doing anything to you, we’re just trying to let you know that you hit my car,’” she said.
The women as well as the accused, 59-year-old Stephen Abbott, subsequently called 911 to report the incident. Abbot, who tried to justify his actions, was recorded telling the 911 operator there was no way he was going to stop for two black people, WSB-TV further reports.
“I don’t know who these people are. I have no idea what they’re doing, but I am not going to stop in traffic for two black people in a beat-up old car,” Abbott told the 911 operator on phone.
He also later claimed the women insulted his “family heritage.”
He was later arrested by police nine miles away from the accident scene and has been charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run and pointing a gun.
The women told WSB-TV they hope they’re reimbursed for damages and are disappointed with how things unfolded as they never played the race card during the confrontation. They only spoke about the car damage.
“We shouldn’t be treated differently because we’re black,” Lewis said.
Abbott is currently out on bond.
