‘Big chop’ is the route some women take to begin their natural hair journey. In recent times, quarantine life has got most celebrities embracing their natural hair with some cutting off all their hair themselves. Although some salons are working now, actress-comedian Tiffany Haddish gave herself the ‘big chop’ on Instagram Live on Tuesday.
The almost 30-minute long video showed Haddish cutting her quarantine protective style faux locs off with scissors. After, a friend chipped in with clippers giving her a close shave to finish the transition.
The “Girls Trip” star captioned the clip “Cut my hair” and went on further to say why she did so.
“I cut all my hair off cause I want to see my Scalp,” Haddish explained. “I know my whole body I know where every mole is but I don’t know my Scalp. So hello Scalp #SheReady to everything.”
Many viewers felt she was having a mental breakdown on social media and I wonder why that might be so. Can a confident woman not do as she pleases with her hair? Are we defined by our tresses?
The 40-year-old sure had some answers for her ‘concerned’ followers in a follow-up clip.
“Nothing is wrong with my brain, you guys. I’m not suffering from no emotional s**t, nothing. I’ve literally been talking about this for years.”
Others also wondered if ‘her man’ will be okay with the new look. She told them off and said, “I’m not consulting my man about nothing that’s growing out of my (expletive) body!”
Do you girl because there is absolutely no standard for how a girl should keep their hair. Ultimately, it is about looking and feeling good and Haddish said, “I look really cute!” and checked herself out adding, “I like it. I like it a lot! … It feels so good.”
It looks good, too!
Hair maintenance can be a drag as wash day can take up to four hours, including the wrapping up at night and the constant moisturizing. It is worth it in the end but no one said it was easy.
Haddish wants a break and she has every right to take one.
“As a black woman — I don’t know about white women — but as a black woman, that’s a good hour to two-three hours of your f**king day. Even if your hair is braided, you gotta grease your scalp, you gotta tie ’em up at night, you gotta make sure they look neat, it’s a lot of work. So, I’m taking time off!”
