It’s all joy as graduate of Oprah Winfrey’s girls school in South Africa pursues PhD

One of the alumni of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Gauteng, South Africa is now set to pursue a PhD.

24-year-old Lindiwe Tsope attained a bachelor’s (honors) in psychology and sociology in 2015 and a master’s degree in social sciences in 2017 at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.

She was awarded the Investec Top 100 Leadership Award in 2016 and 2017 for her leadership roles at Rhodes University.

Tsope was also awarded a scholarship to pursue her PhD.

Tsope graduated from OWLAG in 2012 where her concentration was in dramatic arts, physical sciences and history. As a student of OWLAG, Tsope was a class representative, residence representative, chairperson of Doulous Children with HIV/AIDS Society in 2011 and served as student’s activities board chairperson.

OWLAG is a college preparatory institution founded by Oprah Winfrey in 2002 that officially opened its doors in 2007.  Its first class graduated in 2011.

OWLAG is a private school that educates girls from grades 8 through 12.

There is a current enrollment of 305 students. Melvin King serves as the school’s headmaster.

Winfrey founded the school in hopes of helping disadvantaged children who showed great promise. She wanted to ‘help girls who grew up like her’, “economically disadvantaged, but not poor in mind or spirit.”
