Giant soft drinks maker Coca-Cola has been ordered by the High Court in Kenya to put nutritional information and customer care details on its glass bottles within six months.
Justice Joseph Onguto said that it’s discriminatory for the company to display that information on its plastic bottles and not on the glass bottles.
Nairobi Bottlers and the mother company have since been directed to ensure that they display nutritional information, email address and storage directions on their bottles, including Coca-Cola, Fanta, Krest and Stoney.
Lawyer Mark Ndumia Ndung’u recently hauled the company before the court, accusing it of denying its customers the needed information.
According to him, as a consumer of Coca-Cola drink in a glass bottle, it was rather discriminatory for the firm to refuse to display nutritional information, email address and storage directions.
Mr Ndung’u further argued that it was unfortunate that the company was using the available space on its glass bottle for brand names in big print, instead of using it to provide the needed information.
He believed that it was ideal for consumers to be provided with such nutritional information to enable them to adopt healthy drinking habits and avoid lifestyle diseases.
