Liberia’s President George Weah has released yet another song to the total surprise of his citizens and this time, the former world’s best soccer player is lamenting about a liar who is “trying to track me down for what I don’t know.”
The song, titled Mr. Liar Man, was premiered last week, according to the BBC. It is the fourth song in the repertoire of the president, with the last one, an Afrobeats-tune spreading awareness on the coronavirus, coming out last June.
“In my own country, they’re trying to track me down for what I don’t know… But Mr Liar Man, you know I did not do the things you say I do.” Weah sang in this new one, to reggae instrumentals.
No one knows for sure the target of Weah’s lyrics. An opposition senator reportedly suggested on a radio program in the capital Monrovia that the president was taking aim at a sacked official at the national radio. The official was fired from his job after he criticized Weah’s government in a Facebook post.
However, this allegation has been denied by Weah’s office as well as his supporters.
Weah, who was once Europe’s most sought after player, retired from soccer in 2003 to pursue a political career. In his first attempt at winning the presidency in 2005, Weah lost to Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf who became Africa’s first female president.
The former soccer player’s lack of formal education was cited by many who acknowledged that his popularity among Liberians had not been enough. Weah later pursued a degree in business administration at the DeVry University in Miami, Florida.
He won on his second attempt in 2017.
