In Africa and the diaspora, many are making natural hair a top priority after being exposed to dangerous chemicals via hair care for the longest time.
Jessica Helm, a researcher at the Silent Spring Institute stated, “We know from previous research that black women suffer disproportionately from hormone-related health problems, the study tested hair products used by black women to see if they could be a source of some of the chemicals of concern.”
The study measured a range of hormone-disrupting chemicals in hair products marketed to black women, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Some of the recommendations to black people when it comes to hair care include reducing exposure to harmful products or to go all out natural. This means scrutinising each ingredient in a product as well as using apps such as the Detox Me by the Institution to learn how to reduce exposure to such products.
The other option is to replace the harmful products with natural ingredients.
