Although her baby would not survive due to a rare birth condition, a mother in Louisiana claimed that she was unable to have an abortion since it is illegal in her state.
Nancy Davis claims that she found out that her unborn child had Acrania, a condition in which the fetus’s skull does not form within the womb. She was 10 weeks pregnant when the finding was made.
According to the Fetal Medicine Foundation, an infant with this “lethal disease” does not survive through the first week. During a news conference on Friday, Davis said that her physicians had advised her to undergo an abortion.
However, her medical specialists declared that they would be unable to perform the procedure due to the state’s ban on abortions.
“Basically they said I had to carry my baby to bury my baby,” the now 16 weeks Davis said. She added that “This is not fair to me and it should not happen to any other woman. This has truly been an emotional roller coaster.”
After Roe v. Wade was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court in June of this year, Davis’ lawsuit was brought. Although the law is still being contested in court, it is clear that the overturn’s repercussions have already reached Louisiana, where Davis and other women are suffering the most.
Davis’ legal counsel, Benjamin Crump, has criticized the state’s lawmakers, claiming that the restriction has put his client in danger.
Davis said she will travel to another state to have the procedure done.
