Marvin Gaye’s eldest son, Marvin Gaye III, was on Friday arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife and cousin and also pointing a gun at them. According to TMZ, the Thursday incident occurred at his Los Angeles home after an altercation over an earlier assault. The couple was said to be having problems for a while.
Police responded to the scene in the wake of the incident. But they did not meet Marvin as he had driven away. Marvin turned himself in at the Sheriff’s station the next day. He was subsequently taken into custody on charges of domestic violence and felony assault with a deadly weapon.
Marvin was later released after he posted a $50,000 bond. An emergency protective was also issued to bar Gaye from the home and getting in touch with the family. Authorities later returned to the residence and retrieved two firearms.
The lawyer for the two women said the incident had negatively impacted his clients, adding that the victims plan to fully cooperate with authorities. Marvin was adopted by Marvin Gaye and his wife Anna Gordy, PEOPLE reported. Anna’s niece, Denise Gordy, is Marvin’s biological mother.
In 2013, Marvin revealed he was suffering from kidney failure and was looking for a donor for a transplant, Daily Mail reported. Marvin’s father and namesake, Marvin Gaye, was the son of a church minister and domestic worker and was the second of four children. The “Prince of Soul” grew up singing in the church with his father but was kicked out of the home when he started singing secular music. Gaye later became one of Motown’s biggest figures both as a producer and later on as an artiste in the 1960s.
With several albums to his name, Gaye received numerous accolades and honors during his career and also posthumously. These include a Grammy Award for his 1982 chart-topping single Sexual Healing as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 as well as the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame.
His life was cut short on April 1, 1984, after his father, Marvin Gay Sr., shot him in their home during a confrontation.
