Mo Ibrahim Announces ‘Snapping Cities’ Photo Competition To Explore Urban Africa

 

This week, billionaire Mo Ibrahim announced his “Snapping Cities” photo competition, which will provide a closer lens on burgeoning urban Africa.

With 50 percent of Africa’s population projected to live in cities by 2050 in what economists are calling the “urban age,” “Snapping Cities” seeks to not only capture the continent’s urban experience through original photographs but also use the submissions as a basis to investigate innovation and possible solutions to challenges so that Africa can fulfill its potential in the next 35 years.

From the Mo Ibrahim Foundation:

“In the build-up to our Forum, MIF is inviting anyone interested in this issue to participate in the “Snapping Cities” photography competition. The “Snapping Cities” provides an opportunity for photographers and members of the public of all abilities and ages, to capture through their own lenses, urban life in Africa. We are seeking images that capture inspiring ways of tackling urban challenges in African cities. These may be of modern innovation or basic adaptation of day-to-day life.  The theme is open to personal interpretation but we’re looking for beautiful, inspiring and original photographs.”

The deadline for the competition is October 10th by 5 p.m.

Winners’ photographs will be prominently displayed at the 2014 Ibrahim Forum on African Cities in Accra, Ghana, in November, which will also explore the same themes of how urban centers can act as platforms of “equitable growth and development” on the continent.
