Kenyan ‘Monsoons Over the Moon’ Tells Story of Woman Trapped in Post-Apocalyptic Nairobi

Hitting the Internet last month, self-described mythical Kenyan drama “Monsoons Over the Moon” is set in a post-apocalyptic Nairobi about street gang “The Monsoons” who escape an oppressive dictatorship and work to liberate youth from government oppression.

With actress Anita Kavuu-Ng’ang’a playing the main protagonist “Shiro” (pictured), “Monsoons Over the Moon” focuses on her struggle, after her boyfriend disappears and rivals target her to locate him.

Her precarious — and at times — violent predicament causes Shiro to live in fear until a friend’s book (pictured) opens her mind to the power that lies within her.

Visually stimulating, “Monsoons” leaves viewers at the edge of their seats as they are let in to “Shiro’s world, where the dictator has made use of the Internet forbidden.

About his motivation for making the film, Abstract Omega, the director behind “Monsoon,” told Face2Face Africa, “My motivation for the script was based on my own experiences of living in Nairobi city and witnessing the grim reality that is mostly kept out of the news and swept under the rug. I was compelled with the intention to shine light to this reality.”

With music by Trabolee and Klaus Topfinger, the wider cast of “Monsoons” includes Blessing Lung’aho, Renson Michael, Samuel Charles Mwangi, Brian “Geezo” Mulaa, and Lucy Ndidna.
