Eye-popping, exquisite monuments dot the landscapes of several countries in Africa such that once in a while, it will be difficult to acknowledge that most countries, if not all African countries, are still developing.
From the fascinating $64 million Michelangelo Towers which stand 146m above ground in Sandton South Africa to the massive $220 million Bibliotheca Alexandrina in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, Africa is not short of extraordinary buildings that make the continent a darling of tourists all over the world.
But not all of these monuments were built without serious controversies arising from the venture. A simple definition by the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, International student’s edition (2015) describes a monument as a building, column, statue, etc. built to remind people of a famous person or event.
In Africa, there are several monuments built for such purposes. However, the following monuments were controversy courted due to either the timing of the construction, the amount of money expended or the purpose they serve.
