Faces of Black Excellence

Nigeria’s Burna Boy just made history in London

Burna Boy became the first African artist to headline a UK stadium on Sunday when 80,000 fans trooped to the grounds of West Ham United football club to watch him perform.

Performing his many hits including Last Last and Like to Party, the Nigerian singer’s sellout show became the talk of the town. Besides being surrounded by amazing dancers, the Afrobeats star was also joined on stage by other music greats including Popcaan, Stormzy, and J Hus during his two-hour performance, BBC reported.

“Words can’t explain my emotions right now… there’s nothing else I’d dreamed more of,” Burna Boy said of the show, according to BBC. Ahead of the concert, the London Stadium praised the singer for making history. It wrote on Twitter: “NOW SOLD OUT @burnaboy’s RECORD-BREAKING concert has now officially SOLD OUT. What an incredible achievement for the first-ever African artist to solo headline a UK stadium. For those lucky enough to make it, enjoy the show.”

Sunday’s show was part of Burna Boy’s stops for his Love, Damini world tour. With several global performances, awards, appearances as well as features to his name, Burna Boy has literally been all over the place – for all the right reasons though. Born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu in 1991, Burna Boy also happens to be one of the few African artists to have filled some of the biggest arenas in the U.S. including the Madison Square Garden, Toyota Center, and Hollywood Bowl with a record-breaking crowd.

The self-acclaimed African giant recently made history by selling out the 21,000-capacity State Farm Arena in Atlanta, U.S. He became the first African to sell out the famous arena. The Nigerian Pop Star is also not shy about letting his voice be heard on controversial issues. When his music isn’t advocating for social justice and holding power to account, he puts his voice on issues that matter to the voiceless.
