Tributes are still pouring in for Grammy-winning soul singer Betty Wright who passed away on Sunday from cancer at her home in Miami aged 66.
“Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, godmother, mentor, friend and music icon, Betty Wright, transitioned to be with Lord,” her family wrote in a statement posted on Instagram on Sunday.
Wright, known for her hits “Tonight Is the Night” and “Clean Up Woman,” was nominated for six Grammys and won the best R&B song in 1975 for “Where Is the Love.”
Born Bessie Regina Norris, Wright began singing as young as two years old. At just 12, she was signed to a record company and in 1968, she released her first album, “My First Time Around,” at 15. In the 1980s, she founded her own record label and released the album “Mother Wit.” Throughout her career, she produced more than 15 albums and is remembered for creating hits for artists including Gloria Estefan, Bob Marley and Joss Stone.
“We mourn the loss of this beautiful soul,” singer Chaka Khan wrote on her Instagram page. “I will miss her so.”
“RIP to the legend,” Viola Davis wrote on Twitter. “Your influence and mega talent will make you immortal. Rest well Queen.”
