Rihanna is the ‘baddie’ we all wish we were in every single way. The musician turned beauty and fashion mogul showed everyone why she is a trendsetter on the latest Vogue Italia cover. The shoot, unlike any other done by the artist, was a DIY photoshoot where she shot, styled, and directed the entire shoot with little to no help.
“On set Rihanna played simultaneously the artist and the muse, the observer and the observed, the director and the character, experimenting on the fine line that exists between the two sides of an artist,” the magazine shared on Instagram.
Her trusted collaborator Jahleel Weaver is credited for partially directing the project for the Vogue Italia June edition tagged “Rihanna by Rihanna.”
The ‘Work’ singer is serving legs in a sheer Valentino dress paired with thigh-high lace-up heels on the cover of the magazine, spotting a pixie haircut with neon green highlights.
The issue hit the shelves earlier this month, June 4, and it is Vogue Italia’s first “Do it yourself” issue. The editors agree Rihanna is the perfect muse and creative mind for the project because truly, is there anything Rihanna cannot do?
She took to Instagram to share her stunning looks for the magazine with the “the do it yourself issue 🙌🏿”. Rihanna did give credit to the creatives and brands behind her shoot, and we all know Miss Fenty had to rock her lingerie brand Savage x Fenty, which can be seen peeping through her Valentino dress. Her face beat was done using Fenty Beauty.
“In recent years we have tried to use our cover in many different ways: with photography or illustrations, or with no images at all. But we’ve never invited the featured person to do everything by themselves: to pose, take the photographs and choose the clothes to wear,” the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Emanuele Farneti, said.
“If there was a right occasion for this new experiment, it could only have been the DIY issue. Neither could there have been a better protagonist than Rihanna – who has appeared on so many covers, but never like this time in the version in which she, and only she, has chosen to portray herself, without filters or any mediation,” Farneti added.
It was the most minimalistic yet sophisticated shoot because all the photos published were without filters — what you see is what you get.
This is not the first Vogue Italia cover for Rihanna. The last one was 12 years ago in September 2009, and if there is ever a time to show the world what she is got, this is it. She was in control of how she wanted to be portrayed and in true Rihanna style, each of the featured photos was ‘flawless.’
