We are sure you all have seen Black Panther by now, which means you all saw first-hand how amazing Oscar-winning designer Ruth E. Carter is. The costumes worn in Wakanda were so on point, exhibiting the creativity and talent of Carter. The designer now brings to us her free downloadable designs through her #ColoringWithRuth project.
Now we can awaken our inner creativity as Carter serves us with a dose of #BlackGirlMagic. Although she became more popular and won her first Oscar with her works in Black Panther, she has worked on notable projects like Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X, as well as, Dolemite Is My Name, Hello Beautiful reported.
There is no greater way to serve the world with all her creative prowess like her first H&M collection for which her late 80s and 90s vibes oozed through every piece in the collection.
To celebrate her birthday, the 60-year-old made the big announcement on her collaboration with the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Instagram.
“For my birthday I’m sending out a special surprise to all the young costume designers out there. I am working with @academymuseum and we’ve launched a series called #ColoringWithRuth While you’re at home, you can download a costume design from my portfolio each week and ask me questions.
“Let’s talk color, concept, culture, or just go wild!! I want to see all the incredible ideas you come up with!! Ok? Are you game? Let’s go!! Follow @academymuseum to download the new sketch each week! #strongertogether #andthatsthetruthruth”
Gather here people because these drawings are not just for designers. Everyone with even a little sense of creativity should channel their inner diva and start creating. “African Princess” and “Yorubaland” are the first two downloadable versions.
Carter further explained the concept on the Academy’s website so that all the sistas can better understand her creative length.
For the “African Princess”, she wrote, “this is very much an African American princess. She takes her fashion very seriously. She is wildly eccentric and loves to wear beads and fabrics that represent her tribal ancestry.”
For the “Yorubaland” theme, she said she is “combining the aesthetics from around the African continent from north to south. Celebration is a form of the creative spirit. Imagined with pattern and color that indicted the origin.”
In another post, her caption basically is a PSA. “HAVE YOU SEEN #ColoringWithRuth LOOK AT THE FUN WE ARE HAVING!
“Download a new sketch from my portfolio every week! Look for my comments! Sign with your IG name!” Carter wrote.
Now folks can indulge in all these melanin inspired designs and get to coloring. Carter says she would love to see all your beautiful takes on her drawings, so tag her in all your uploads on Instagram.
