SA university expels student who urinated on another student’s belongings

South Africa’s Stellenbosch University has fired a White student who was videoed urinating on a Black student’s belongings and bragging about it. The decision to expel Theuns du Toit came after the university announced an investigation into the incident, Face2Face Africa reported in May.

The expelled student was allegedly drunk when he urinated on Babalo Ndwayana’s laptop and his other belongings, BBC reported. du Toit also called the Black first-year student a “boy” when he was committing the act.

The investigations determined du Toit’s actions were racist. The incident, which gained nationwide attention and drew the ire of the public, also triggered protests.

Stellenbosch University’s Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) listened to testimonies from eight witnesses during the investigation. du Toit was ultimately expelled on Thursday after he was found guilty of breaching the educational institution’s disciplinary code for students, BBC reported.

“The findings led the CDC to conclude that there is no alternative but to expel [the student] with immediate effect from the university,”  a statement from the university said.

du Toit can appeal the decision, but he has to do that within five days.

“The university takes a zero-tolerance approach to racism, discrimination, prejudice and conduct which assails the dignity of another person,” the vice-chancellor of the university, Prof Deresh Ramjugernath, said.

The country’s police are also investigating the incident.
