Letter to a Son: It Is Never Too Late for Redemption

Over time, I’ve seen great men fall, a man who once mentored me went too far in His quest for wealth, became too ambitious, and forgot traditional values. He died a drunkard and his funeral was like a war zone because children began to emerge claiming that he was their father. It was dramatic and at the same time sad because he was a great man. If only he had retraced his steps at one point, if only he didn’t take that step to that bar, if only he had never met “Delilah.”

Here, is a fictional letter from a Mother to Samson who is a biblical character known to be betrayed by the girl he loved known as Delilah. He didn’t end too well. If you’re currently entangled in a habit that has gotten the best of you, imagine this letter is for you. It’s never too late to retrace your steps.

Dear Samson:

I remember you as a kid…

Young and healthy, growing big…

I carried you for nine months in my stomach…

And wrapped you warmly on my back…

I showered you with my love and care…

In that little eyes of yours, we were so dear…

Growing up, you faced whatever came your way without fear…

You challenged giants, and when I was in need, you were always there…

As you grew into a strong youth…

With dignity and pride you never forgot your root…

You could break walls and pull down iron bars…

You protected your loved ones even when it gave you scars…

I raised a very brave, athletic strong young man…

And when things weren’t so good, you were still kind…

Till you started hanging out with strife, desperation, rage, anger, and alcohol…

Greed was your closest pal, you broke up with contentment and wanted all…

Then you met her, Delilah, you took her in…

Got married and gave birth to a baby girl you named heroin…

Her addictive effect reduced you to slavery…

You got entangled with all the lies, pleasures, and harlotry…

You preyed on the weak and took goods from the poor forcefully…

But nothing seemed enough, you wanted more girls, more drugs, more money…

The strong man I once knew now passes out in his own vomit…

A man once brave now sneaks, runs, and hides, you just can’t quit…

All your daily hustles and financial gains you lavish on bottles of beer…

Lying hopeless and helpless on Delilah’s lap, you seem to be stuck there…

And as every day passes, you become more and more useless…

All your fame and fortune piled up like dirt, you’re becoming worthless…

Every evil communication has become a snare to you my Samson…

You seldom shower, often visit road side prostitutes, and now you stink…

I cry out every morning, ‘O, where is my son?’…

Where’s that young man whose face shone like the sun…

Who smiled at challenges and overcame with his sword…

Great men stood and listened to the wisdom of his words…

You took a wrong step, now you’ve gone a mile…

You lost your vision, now you’re totally blind…

Tossed around by the wind and people of your kind…

Come back to me Samson. I don’t care how far you have gone…

I’ll clean you up and help you through, after all you’re still my son…

Till you return…

I’ll always be Your Mom.

  • reminds me of the parable Jesus taught of the prodigal son. I now think of it as the gracious father. And reminds me of something my own mom said to me and to this day it echoes in my ear- "there is nothing you can do that will ever let me stop loving you" Those powerful words have kept me stable in this shaky world.

  • At one point everyone have had to retrace their steps, being inspired by words such as 'therefore let us come boldly into the throne of grace........'. For a saint is Just a sinner who falls down and gets back up again....
