Seven African-American female service members who made history

Charity Adams Earley commanded the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, making her commander of the first and only all-female, all-black army unit.

Deciding to or being called to serve is an awesome task that a few experience. For these African-American women, their experiences in the Armed Forces were shaped by segregation.

But with bravery, strength and fortitude, they went on to achieve success in their careers and would play key roles in the history of the U.S. Armed Forces.

As Women’s History Month is being celebrated to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society, here are some African-American women who have made significant accomplishments in the Armed Forces, paving way for others.
