Rapper The Game is the latest rapper to venture into cryptocurrency with his debut non-fungible token (NFT) Collection titled “Genesis” on October 6.
The rapper partnered with OneOf, a green marketplace designed for the music industry, to release the non-fungible token. The price was set at $25 in a move to ensure that all fans can have access to the collection.
According to the OneOf website, The Game’s passions, hobbies and album releases inspired the collection and album releases.
“I have been able to put forth my creative vision on display and show, not only the growth of my music career but also show the passion I have for basketball and gaming with these digital card packs…The Genesis NFT Collection will give a nod to my first album, The Documentary, and Jesus Piece, and will also have two unreleased tracks for my fans.”
On October 8, he launched a second series to the collection titled “Elevate the Game” valued at $99 for fans to have access to two Gold NFT cards and the chance to receive a platinum NFT card. And on October 12, he debuted The “Master The Game” pack valued at $299.
The Game is not the only rapper or Black artiste to venture into cryptocurrency. Others include:
Jay-Z
In February, billionaire rapper Jay-Z teamed up with Twitter CEO to invest in bitcoin. The two billionaires reportedly invested 500 bitcoin into a new endowment called ₿trust.
Ja Rule
The rapper has helped form a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace called Flipkick.io with serial entrepreneur Robert Testagrossa and engineer James Cropcho.
According to revolt. tv, the rapper in March sold a Fyre Festival painting for $122,000 in cryptocurrency, and in June, he signed a deal with the Ethereum-based startup Roll.
Lil Yachty
Lil Yachty joined the digital currency market with his own cryptocurrency called “YachtyCoin.” In December 2020, it was announced that the musician will tokenize himself on Fyooz.io, a social money platform that allows fans to buy access to their favorite artistes and influencers.
Nas
Nas is an investor in cryptocurrency trading platform Coinbase. He first invested in the platform in 2014.
50 Cent
50 cent reportedly has a bitcoin stash worth $7.8 million from the sales of his 2014 Animal Ambition album, according to Complex. However, in a court document, he stated that the coins were converted into dollars in 2014, which would have “only” netted him about $460,000.
Akon
In 2018, Akon revealed he was going to build a futuristic city in Senegal that will use a cryptocurrency called Akoin – named after himself.
Akon said it is the first 100% crypto-based city with Akoin at the center of transactional life where consumers will be able to buy, hold and spend cryptocurrency straight from their smartphones, the BBC reported.
Megan Thee Stallion
In August, rapper Megan Thee Stallion launched a video of herself explaining cryptocurrency to her followers in partnership with Cash App, a mobile payment service developed by Jack Dorsey’s Square Inc.
Prior to the launch of the video, she had given away $1 million in bitcoin to her fans in collaboration with Square’s Cash App.
Meek Mill
Similarly, rapper Meek Mill became a major investor of Dogecoin, a popular currency. He is said to have invested $53,000 in Dogecoin.
The global cryptocurrency market is valued at $575 billion. It is, therefore, no surprise that more and more celebrities are getting involved in the sector.
